They say that puppies are cute for a reason. That reason is so that you will not get so mad at them when they are making messes around your house. One of the first and most important things that you as a new dog owner have to do in order to have a long and happy relationship with your dog, is learn house training your puppy.

However, it can also be one of the hardest things that dog owners will need to do with their puppy. Fortunately, there are several simple and proven steps that you can take to get your new puppy to potty where you want him to go. The following puppy house training tips and suggestions should get you and your new puppy off to a great start and make your life with your puppy a bit easier.

Potty Training Your Puppy

One of the more common techniques to house training your puppy these days is the use of a crate. The main reason that this technique of crate training your puppy has become so popular is because it is usually successful. A dog will not want to go to the bathroom in the same spot where he sleeps. By keeping your puppy in his crate for a few hours here and there will help him to control his bladder until he is out of the crate.

When you let your dog out of the crate, you will then need to bring him outside and show him where to go to the bathroom. A good way to reinforce this method of puppy toilet training is to offer him a treat or some form of positive reinforcement to encourage him to repeat that behavior.

Another benefit to using a crate for potty training your puppy is that it gives your dog a place to rest when you are not able to watch him. A crate is especially good for times such as these at night while you are sleeping or when you are not home.

A new puppy, in a new environment can sometimes wreak a bit of havoc. However, you do not want to leave your puppy in their crate for too long initially. You can increase the amount of time once they are accustomed to it, but not even an older dog should be left in a crate for more than six to eight hours at a time.

Cleaning Up After Your Puppy

It is almost inevitable that at some point during the house training of your puppy, your new puppy will have an accident in your home. When this does happen, the best approach is to just ignore the mess.

The old technique of reprimanding your dog or putting his nose in it does not work.

Instead, when accidents happen while you are house training your puppy, lead your dog outside and show him where you want him to go. You can then clean up the mess while your dog is not looking. Make sure to completely clean the area with a commercial cleaner to eliminate any odor left behind, because otherwise your puppy will go to the same spot again and again.

It may initially seem like a lot of work and it does require a bit of time and patience, however puppy toilet trainingis doable. With the use of a crate and some patience and consistency on your part, your will be able to house train your puppy very quickly. This will to ensure a long and happy relationship with your new dog.
