Time-Tested Puppy Leash Training Techniques

Most people who have just brought a small puppy into their homes for the very first time will likely have the tendency of treating it like a baby because it is adorable and cuddly. This could result in having a spoiled, bratty dog later on which could cause the pet owner all kinds of pet behavioral difficulties.

It is best to train dogs while they are young so that discipline can be established from the start. Dog leash training is one of the most important programs that your pet should undergo. Educating your pet on wearing a leash while the dog is still young is a lot easier than starting the training later on once the dog is bigger and more difficult to restrain.

A little puppy will not be able to pull away like an older dog that could already be strong enough to drag its owner around or even cause harm.

Puppy Leash Training Steps

The primary step in the procedure of dog or puppy leash training involves getting the puppy to become familiar with wearing a dog collar. The common initial reaction of a puppy that is just beginning to undergo dog leash training is to reject the collar.

The puppy will scratch and roll around and do all sorts of things to try to take off the collar at first. You may feel like taking off the collar out of pity and concern for the puppy but resist the urge to do so. Wait for the puppy to calm down.

Distract his attention if he keeps rejecting the collar

Distract his attention with a toy or anything that would make him forget about the collar. He will then forget about the collar and get used to wearing it all the time. You can remove it later on but only at times when it is not misbehaving so that your puppy understands that the collar will only be removed during times that it is behaving properly.

When he accepts the collar, start with the leash

The second step in the exercise of dog leash training will involve attaching the leash onto the collar of the puppy. Let the puppy pull the leash around while it is running about and at play. It will forget about the leash in no time just as it did with the collar. This will be the indication that the puppy is now ready for the next step in dog leash training.

Just keep in mind that safety should come first so do not let the puppy run around while pulling his leash without supervision because it is likely for his leash to get caught on things. It would be awful for things to get broken and for the puppy to get wounded.

Finally start slowly with little walks around the house

The final step in leash training a puppy entails holding the end of the puppy’s leash. You can walk him around the house or even around the block if your puppy is behaving well. Your puppy should walk right beside you and its leash should be loose so as not to choke the puppy. If your puppy starts to walk ahead and starts tugging on the leash, stop walking. At this point you should call your puppy back to your side.

Continue pacing once the puppy returns to your side. Let the leash hang loose. Prepare a treat to serve as a reward when your puppy is being obedient so that it discovers that walking around is fun even with a collar and a leash on.

A final word of caution, once you get the puppy do the dog leash training as soon as possible. A friend of mine once bought a puppy. It was very cute so they just let it roam around their house. A few weeks later, it had broken a lot of things and had become more aggressive. They tried to put a leash on it then, but it was too late, and it started barking and biting. In a month they had to deliver it to the local pound. Too bad.
